Arkansas

Arkansas is a state located in the southern region of the United States of America. Arkansas shares a border with six states, with its eastern border largely defined by the Mississippi River. Its diverse geography ranges from the mountainous regions of the Ozarks and the Ouachita Mountains, which make up the U.S. Interior Highlands, to the eastern lowlands along the Mississippi River. The capital and most populous city is Little Rock, located in the central portion of the state.

The name Arkansas is a French pronunciation of a Quapaw word meaning "land of downriver people". The pronunciation "arkansaw" was made official by an act of the state legislature in 1881.

The Little Rock-North Little Rock-Pine Bluff Combined Statistical Area had 829,032 people in the 2006 census estimates and is the largest in Arkansas.

The state flag of Arkansas is red white and blue to signify that Arkansas is one of the United States. The large diamond represents the only diamond producing state in the USA (Arkansas). 25 white stars show Arkansas as the 25th state to join the Union. Three blue stars below the word ARKANSAS are symbols for the three nations which ruled Arkansas before it became a state (Spain, France, and the United States), and also signify that Arkansas was the third state created out of the Louisiana Purchase. The fourth lone star above the word ARKANSAS represents the Confederacy.

In 1912 the battleship Arkansas was to be commissioned, and the Pine Bluff chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) promised to present the ship with an Arkansas state flag for the occasion. However, when they wrote to the Secretary of State to learn more about the flag, he replied that Arkansas had no State flag!

The DAR went into action and held a contest in Arkansas for a state flag design. Miss Willie Hocker from Wabbaseka, AR submitted the winning entry (the Confederate star was not part of this original design, but added later by legislature).

The mockingbird was recognized as the official state bird of Arkansas in 1929. Northern Mockingbirds have extraordinary vocal abilities - they can sing up to 200 songs, including the songs of other birds, insect and amphibian sounds.

Arkansas designated the apple blossom as the official state flower in 1901. Arkansas was once a major apple producing state and still has an Arkansas apple festival each year in the town of Lincoln (in Washington county).

Arkansas Razorbacks

The Arkansas Razorbacks, also known as the Hogs, are the names of college sports teams at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The term Arkansas Razorbacks properly applies to any of the all-male sports team at the university while women's teams at the University of Arkansas are generally referred to as "The Lady'Backs". The Razorbacks take their name from the feral pig of the same name. The University of Arkansas student body voted to change the name of the school mascot (originally the Cardinals) in 1910 to the Arkansas Razorbacks. Since the Razorback name was already in use by the Texarkana Arkansas High School Razorbacks, the University agreed to 'use' the Razorback logo as their mascot; In turn, giving Arkansas High School used athletic equipment from the university. The Arkansas Razorbacks are the only major sports team in the US with a porcine nickname. More Arkansas entries....
