Alan Walbridge Ladd (September 3, 1913 – January 29, 1964) was an American film actor born in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He was famous for his emotionless demeanor and small stature (reports of his height vary from 5'2" to 5'5", with 5'5" being the most generally accepted today). In the majority of his films, he played either the hero or a bad guy with a conscience.
After first becoming a star with his performance as a hitman with a conscience in This Gun for Hire (1942), he became most famous for his starring role as a gunfighter in the classic 1953 western Shane. Ladd also made Quigley's Top 10 Stars of the Year List 3 times, 1947, 1953 and 1954. In 1954 he starred alongside Peter Cushing and Patrick Troughton in the British film The Black Knight, unusually cast as a medieval swashbuckling hero, and surrounded by veterans of British films. Unfortunately, this film was being made just as Shane was becoming a gigantic critical and commercial hit, and Ladd missed out on the public events surrounding his most popular success.
Jordan Ladd was born in Hollywood, California, the daughter of Charlie's Angels star Cheryl Ladd and David Ladd, a producer and former actor. Her paternal grandfather was Alan Ladd, a famous film actor, and her paternal grandmother was Sue Carol (née Evelyn Lederer), a Hollywood talent agent and actress.
At the age of two, Ladd began appearing in commercials. Her first commercial was for Polaroid. She began acting in film and television while in school, often working with her mother on films. After graduating high school, she took up acting professionally. Ladd turned to acting in independent films and has become known in the indie film circuit.
The film stars Alan Ladd, Jean Arthur and Van Heflin with Brandon De Wilde, Elisha Cook Jr., Jack Palance and Ben Johnson.
